About the project
Just imagine if Kinsale had its own arts venue. What a tremendous asset this would be to the community, providing a place for theatre, dance and music, along with areas for workshops, teaching rooms, a gallery and a cultural information centre, it might also include a cinema, shop, café and arts library as well as other facilities, for all ages. There is no obvious building in Kinsale for this venue so an opportunity exists to create an exciting and innovative solution.

The Design an Arts Venue for Kinsale project is a competition, organised by Kinsale Arts Week 2006, which is open to everyone aged 13+ and living in County Cork, entries will be accepted from individuals or teams. There are two categories; youth (under 18) and adult, with a prize for the winner of each category. This is a fantastic opportunity for budding designers, architects or anyone with a creative vision for Kinsale. And who knows, perhaps one day that vision could become a reality!

Registration
To register for this competition, please read the Competition Rules, before completing the form below and return to KAW2006 by 30th April 2006. Your design for the competition must be completed and submitted by no later than 30th June 2006.

Entries
Select a location in Kinsale and design an arts venue for that location. The location may be anywhere, regardless of ownership or planning and the venue may be of any shape or size. Entries should demonstrate how the design benefits the town and maximises its appeal. Whilst the judges will assess for creativity and innovation, they will also be looking for practicality.

Entries should consist of:

  • location photos (with and without new building drawn in)
  • floor-plans of each storey (not necessarily to scale)
  • artists impressions of the building
  • a 3D model of the building
  • brief written support material

Entrants may be asked to make a short presentation of their ideas at the Art, Architecture and Design seminar during the Arts Week 2006. The winners will get the chance to meet the judges and discuss their vision.

Judging panel – a panel of judges will include (a) an established local or Cork-based architect (b) an arts director/manager from a leading Cork arts venue and (c) an engineer/planner.
